The Employees’ State Insurance (ESI) Scheme provides medical care and benefits to organised-sector workers and their dependants. This guide explains who is covered and how registration works.
Who Is Covered
- Employees of covered establishments earning monthly wages up to Rs 21,000 (Rs 25,000 for persons with disability)
- The ESI Act applies to non-seasonal factories and specified establishments with 10 or more employees (20 in a few states)
- The Insured Person’s family and dependants are also covered for medical benefit
How Registration Works
- The employer registers the establishment online and registers each employee at the time of joining
- The worker first receives a Temporary Identification Certificate (TIC), valid 30 days
- After Aadhaar seeding it becomes the permanent e-Pehchan card with a unique IP (Insured Person) number
- The IP number stays the same across job changes, and the e-Pehchan card can be downloaded from the ESIC IP portal or UMANG app
Accessing Care
With the Aadhaar-linked Pehchan card, the insured person and family can access ESI dispensaries and hospitals for medical benefit, including at their place of residence or elsewhere in the country.
