ESIC Treatment Rates Explained: How Reimbursement Works

The Employees’ State Insurance (ESI) Scheme provides medical care to organised-sector workers below a wage threshold and their dependants. A common question is what "rates" ESIC pays for specialty treatment.

How ESIC Rates Work

ESIC does not publish its own separate price list for major surgeries. For specialty and super-specialty treatment at tie-up or empanelled hospitals, reimbursement is generally made at the CGHS package rate of the concerned city. ESIC/AIIMS rates are used only where no CGHS package rate exists.

Package rates are benchmarked to the semi-private ward, with a small reduction for general-ward beneficiaries. Where no CGHS ceiling exists for an implant, reimbursement is capped (commonly at a percentage of MRP including GST); otherwise implant and stent ceilings follow CGHS rates.

Referrals and Coverage

Primary and secondary care is delivered through ESI dispensaries and ESIC hospitals. For specialty care, beneficiaries are referred to empanelled hospitals. Super-specialty bills are reimbursed by ESIC subject to the applicable rules.

  • Specialty treatment is referred from ESI facilities to empanelled hospitals
  • Tie-up hospital reimbursement follows CGHS city package rates
  • Implant/stent ceilings generally follow CGHS notified rates

Frequently Asked Questions

What rates does ESIC pay hospitals?

For empanelled and tie-up hospital specialty care, ESIC generally reimburses at the CGHS package rate of the concerned city, using ESIC/AIIMS rates only where no CGHS rate exists.

Does ESIC have its own surgery price list?

Not for the major surgeries; it relies on CGHS package rates. This is why CGHS rate lists are a useful reference for ESIC beneficiaries too.
