Normal Delivery vs C-Section Cost in North India

A caesarean (C-section) usually costs more than a normal delivery because it is a surgical procedure with a longer hospital stay. This guide compares private ranges and the CGHS package rates.
Delivery Cost Comparison
- Normal delivery, private (typical) — Rs 60,000 - 2,00,000
- C-section, private (typical) — Rs 1,00,000 - 2,50,000
- Normal delivery, CGHS (non-NABH) — Rs 8,000
- C-section, CGHS (non-NABH) — Rs 14,050
Rates shown are as per the CGHS package rates (OM dated 01.10.2014 schedule) and PM-JAY HBP 2022, alongside typical private-hospital ranges from Indian hospital sources (2014/2022 schemes; private ranges 2025) and are subject to periodic revision. Always verify the latest approved rates on the official source.
Why the Difference Is So Large
Government schemes pay fixed, pre-negotiated package rates, while private list prices reflect facility tier, implant or technology choice, surgeon fees and room category. A scheme package is also all-inclusive for the standard stay, whereas a private estimate may list items separately.
For eligible beneficiaries, treatment under CGHS, PM-JAY, ESIC or ECHS is largely cashless at empanelled hospitals, so the scheme rate is what the scheme pays the hospital rather than your out-of-pocket cost.
